Title: A Science Hardware Makerspace
Several years ago at the University of Alberta we faced a potentially long-term stasis in our upper-level undergraduate experimental physics courses. At the same time, we had witnessed an erosion of opportunities for students to acquire hands-on transferrable skills during their degrees. Inspired by the maker movement, we resolved to launch an experiment designed to work on both problems at once.
I will describe the present status of our Science Hardware Makerspace, and how it is contributing to
- expanding hands-on opportunities for students
- agility in developing new labs and introducing them into our experimental physics sequence
- a grassroots, student-driven movement adding to the mix of interdisciplinary activities at the university
